Alfred Hitchcock: Foreign Correspondent (1940)

Foreign Correspondent (1940)

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

***SPOILER ALERT***

I was excited to see Foreign Correspondent (1940) because it was starting to be interesting to see how Hitchcock progressed in his film style and ability; also my grandfather was a foreign correspondent in Korea so I was interested to see what the film was about. This movie is most interesting as an artifact from the Second World War. It must have been interesting for Hitch, to write in Hollywood at Wartime before the US had even entered- so much was up in the air.

The movie is a spy thriller that tells the story of an American reporter who is sent by his paper to report on the War in Europe. Antics ensue.

This was Hitckcock’s second Hollywood-based feature following Rebecca and was still under the professional supervision of David O Selznick.

To me, this one was pretty average. It had some great moments, like the scene with the umbrellas on the stairs. Also some great monikers including “Plunger Stebbins” and “Huntley Haverstock.”
